'...probably their best work yet, a beautifully majestic set of songs.' Drowned In Sound
'Ports is just minimal enough not to be cloying, and just acoustic enough to be devastatingly gentle.' A New Band A Day
'A soothing and heart-achingly tender track' Abacus Post
Mr Ben Sir is a recording collective scattered across the North East coastline, the ‘Portraits EP’ will be their third release via The Calico Print. Lead track ‘Ports’ has been described by one local promoter as reminiscent of Low at their most laid back, or Sparklehorse at their most inviting.
The EP follows up the success of debut release the ‘Transport EP’ that found favourable reviews and airplay from Drowned in Sound, NARC Magazine, BBC Newcastle & Amazing Radio and recent single ‘Cameras Don’t Click’ that was championed by Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 2 as well as his daytime BBC 6 Music show.
‘Portraits’ continues the austere, insular and nocturnal feel of their debut with the wistful ‘We Only Fly At Night’ and intimate ‘Long City Walk’. Mr Ben Sir is the output of Ben Charlesworth aided by a collective of musicians, Ben’s versatility and experimentalism has seen him switch effortlessly between these delicate and detached songs to radio friendly singles and is now working on a project with electronic producer Foxymoron marrying his soft vocal and ambient piano with beats and samples.
Ben rarely plays live as contributing musicians are spread across continents and other projects but he plays a solo show supporting Withered Hand in the incredible surroundings of Newcastle’s Mining Institute on Monday 24th September with a full collective live show planned for sometime in the future.
